Abatement and baseline headroom

Avoid, reduce, substitute, remove, then compensate. The order is the point, and the numbers are all yours.

The mitigation hierarchy
The tier is fixed by the kind of lever, not chosen by you. Self-classification is where a hierarchy quietly collapses, so an offset purchase cannot be entered as a reduction here.
  1. 1. Avoid

    Do not create the emission at all. Changing what is built, mined or processed, or not proceeding with an activity.

  2. 2. Reduce

    Do the same work with less energy or less leakage. Efficiency, recovery and loss elimination.

  3. 3. Substitute

    Do the same work with a lower-emitting input. Electrification, fuel switching and low-carbon supply.

  4. 4. Remove

    Take carbon out of the atmosphere, or capture it before release, and store it durably. Counted separately from avoided emissions.

  5. 5. Compensate

    Purchase units representing abatement elsewhere. This addresses residual emissions after the steps above. It is not abatement by the organisation and is never reported as though it were.
